Received a new Tetratec ex1200 today and installed it, all working fine, 5 hours later its making a heck of a noise, really loud humming, Ive shaking it a little to make sure its not trapped air, but it wont stop, what have done wrong? And will it clear, as its driving me nuts! Along with the juwel internal thats noisy anyway, its really loud, cant hear the TV above it, its that bad!

If it's now, it may take a few days to settle down. I assume you took it appart and checked all the components before starting it up yes? What type of hum are you getting? Like a rattle, grinding or just a plain hum?

Yep took the lid off and checked all the bits before starting it up, its a really really loud hum, not rattling or anything, when I tip it slightly back and forward, it releases more air and stuff, so I guess it just air, sounds like a vibrating noise kinda, very annoying!!

Well, give it a couple of days to settle down. Notify your supplyer that it is noisy so you have some fall back if it doen't, but rest assured that it should do :good: If it doesn't, with a rattle, the most likley culprits are the bearings or impeller...

There should be a date of manufactuer somewhere on the box/unit, what is it? There was a batch that went out about a year ago with iffy motor heads, so if it's old stock, that could be the issue, but faults are usualy very rare with Tetratecs unless they are damaged in transit.

Final couple of questions, are the flaps of your Juwel tank touching the inlet/outlet pipes? What does foam under said pipes do to the noise level?

Will check the box later, as its in the shed and its now persisting it down! When I first started it up, it made the usual noises, then went really quiet, I thought great as quiet as everyone said it should be, buts its over the last hour or so, starting to get this hum. Definatley not a rattle.

The lid is touching the in/out pipes but lifting it doesnt make a difference, its definately coming from the filter itself, I open the cupboard and it gets louder. Actually it was quite a result, thought Id have the cut the lid, but the pipes fit perfectly in the slot already in the tank and the lid sits nicely on the top exactly where it should, so no cutting required :)

Started quiet and got louder, hum..... Take a quick look at the Impeller and see that all is well. Usualy, once they are quiet, they stay quite or get quieter still. Just before you do this, try moving the filter closer to one wall of the cabinet than the other, and further foreward/back. Is this the only exturnal filter you run on this tank, or is there another exturnal on the tank?

When you look at the impeller, obviously the top should be fixed to the magnet in a way that it does not move on this filter. The impeller should have some up-and-down play on the shaft but no side-to-side looseness. Make sure the bearings are not chapped e.t.c and that the impeller is free to move.

This said, your last post says there is not a rattle. That would mean your just getting a hum? Is it metallic or just hum? If just hum, it can only realy be the motor head itself and it's a send it back job if it doesn't get better within a few hours  A metalic hum could be something in/arround the filter also, but again most likely the motor head

Yup only external at present running the the original juwel internal (which is being removed eventually), ok, moved it closer to the back wall and it seems a little quieter, not a lot but a bit, plus its really starting to kick out some air as the output suddenly goes really fast, I can hear it from the spraybar, so gotta be trapped air right??

If it doesnt quiet down in a couple of hours, I shall switch it off and check the impellor. Its just a loud hum, doesnt sound metallicy, when I put my ear to it, I can hear a faint rattle, but that sounds like the black ball things rattling around, not a grinding rattle (if you get what I mean?)

Shall keep you posted, as I at the moment its louder than a fluval 305 I had, which I know it shouldnt be.

Could try a majic shake.... Pick it up and gently shake it, this should remove any trapped air :good:

We set up our new Tetratec EX1200 this past weekend. It's as quiet as they come, Very impressed actually :good: So if yours is at all noisy there is something not quite right. Did you take the carbon packs out or at least remove them from the plastic bags they were in:? Sorry if that's a stupid comment - but when people still roast chickens with the giblets in in their bag - anything's possible lol :)

Its slowly getting quieter, might try turning it off and having a look inside in a minute though, once kids outta the way.

Haha, yes I did indeed take the carbon bags out of the packet and the ceramic media too  I know sometimes Im dumb (ok so alot of the time!) but not on this occassion :p

Hello trouble, have you tried tilting it?quite alot.....see what it sounds like there,if it spludges and goes quiet then repeat this motion as in angle at 40degree then 30/10 each time holding it in that position for about 1-2mins until its level again..

Thank you all for your suggestions, I would like to now say: Silence is golden!! After tipping, shaking, tilting, screaming ALOT, I gave up, unplugged everything, opened it up, unscrewed the impellor cover, pushed about abit with it, done it all back up again, turned it on and VOILA, it is now running much faster and much quieter.

I also took the stupid lid off my juwel internal and also that is now pretty quiet too.
