anyone used this?
i am embarking on a maintenance and upgrade plan which includes switching to external filtration, and a planted sand substrate.
i was looking for a suitable base substrate to help in the plant growth and found this stuff - is it any good, can it be added to a full aquarium - i have afew fish in there and would rather not move them to carry out this work..
i gather i can get away with adding sand whilst the fish are still in residence, will this go in OK too.

thoughts and opinions greatly appreciated

thanks

I've added this to my tank, it's going well so far. Not sure about adding it to a tank whilst the fish are still in it though, i added mine to an empty tank. Water went cloudy when i filled the tank up but that was more likely to be the sand.

I think plant base layers will get messy if you try and add them while the water is it, i think they are sort of like clay type substances and i would probably mess your water up if they came into direct contact with it, complete substrates i think are like pourous gravel infused with nutrients and such and can be added with the water in i would think altough i dont know if that would help as your after putting sand on top. I've not actually used the stuff myself though so i would wait for someone elses opinion to to either back that up or dismiss it.

I still have some left in the bucket if you'd like to see what it looks like. I think you'd have problems with bits of it floating etc.

It'll be a lot easier if you could empty the tank, place the fish in a bucket or somewhere.
