I have a Molly with pop eye, Maracyn has not done much for her and in my web searches I find Tetracycline (TCN) is recommended. I happen to have TCN in my med cabinet, and would consider dosing her with that. I work in the eye surgery business, so get my hands on Steroids and antibiotics routinely, and have had great success in using human doses on animals (goats and horses). If anybody will admit to trying human TCN on fish, how much did you dose? Too little and the bacteria get resistant, too much and the animal can go toxic.

I live far out in the country, so a quick drive into a LFS isn't much of an option, plus, they probably won't have TCN for fish anyway. Maybe for cattle.....

I used our antibiotics they use the same one's as us on animals and fish, only thing is the dosage, i would just for now chop a bit off the end of the tablet, crush the tablet up with a spoon to a very fine power, then get a jug of tank water and mix it in very well, only thing is i wouldn't add it to the main tank as it will wipe the bacteria colony out.

Maracyn 2 would of been better.

Tetracycline
Manufacturer: Aquatronics
A broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacterial infections. For infections of fin and tail rot, frayed fins, popeye, inflamed gills, mouth and body open sores/ulcers, livebearer disease, dropsy, Columnaris, and secondary infections such as fungal. Specific for livebearers and goldfish. Aerate the aquarium well when using. Useful for the control of some common bacterial diseases, including Aeromonias and Pseudomonas Genera and the Mysobacterial group.

Hi, I used Interpet no9 for popeye and it worked very well. It tells you the dose so might be easier? :)

yeah definitely quarantine the sick fish cause you might overdose and kill the bacteria in your filter... In theory though if you get the right concentration it should work

Thanks guys, the molly has been quarantined for about 4 days. I knew that an anitbiotic would kill off all of the bacteria in the tank, and I didn't want to go through a cycling process again. Regular Maracyn did nothing for the popeye, so thought I would try the TCN. What I have are capsules full of very fine powder. I did go ahead and use a very small quantity. For a human dose, one capsule daily, so for a tiny fish, just a small sprinkling is what I used. No adverse effects other than there is a bit of a foam on the surface of the water. (filter running, but with no carbon, only coarse fiber in it). For a human treatment would take several days, so I will dose daily in very tiny amounts. I am also adding Melafix to the tank. The hospital tank I am using is only 2.5 gal, so I am being very careful not to over medicate. I am considering doing a water change tomorrow prior to medicating. some medications say to not do any water changes, but I am afraid of over doing it.

Water change or not?

The whitness on top of the tank is normal with antibiotics, replace the med back with a water change, though it hard with antibiotics, it surprising how much antibiotic you can use with fish, i've used a full tablet before now on a sick oranda when my partner bought her, don't forget the extra aeration as meds take 02 out of the water.
