Hi All
I hope someone can help me please.
I have a 4' x 2' aquarium which has been set up for well over 6 months, and some of the fish I've had for a few years and have survived a house move.
I have a variety of fish in the tank, plec's, guppies, catfish, etc. all living happily together.
I've had no problems until a week ago.
I decided to try the Tetra Pro Energy. I fed them as advised on the tin and all seemed fine.
After a few days the fish seemed really active, hey ho I thought, it's doing what it says on the tin "extra energy".
Problem started Sunday when the one fish seemed to be at the top of the tank and was struggling. Unfortunately he was dead the following morning, so I removed him and checked the others, one of which seemed a bit lethargic.
Came home from work on Monday and another 2 had died.
The big Plec "George" seemed to be really struggling to breathe, if he was a dog, I'd have said he was panting.
I have now cleaned out the filters, these are done regularly, changed some of the water and I have not fed them until today with their original food, as the new food was the only change I have made to the tank in months.
Thankfully no more deaths, but I'd be really interested if anyone else has had any problems?
Many thanks

Did you perhaps overfeed? Overestimating because of a new food would be my best guess. How do you clean your filters? Have you tested the water atll, and if so can you post the results please?

I've used that food with no problems.

I have a horrible horrible feeling that it says to feed 'as much as your fish can eat in so many seconds... 3-4 times a day'.

In which case it will be an ammonia/nitrite spike

Lots of water changes and personally i would be donig the 'new tank dose' of whater biological supplement you use like Cycle or Filter Start etc..

Gasping at the top suggests there may not be enough oxygen in the water, or they may be struggling to breathe due to ammonia/nitrite problems as others have said.
