This is going to be a stupid question I know

What test shows the amount of ammonia? I have PH reading, Nitrate, GH, KH. I know the aim is to have the level of ammonia at 0 but not sure how I find that out

you need to buy an Ammonia testing kit ;) Many on here recommend the API Master test Kit which has Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Low and High ph. About £16 off ebay plus P & P.

Oh right thanks :good: . I brought a Tetratest Laborett testing kit and the man in my LFS said its all I would need :grr:

Wish I had joined up and asked the question before now

Also be sure to get the freshwater version of any liquid test kit. Sometimes people don't look until they get home and they have the saltwater version.

Ok i'll double check thanks for that

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

As has been said before, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.

For some reason that I have never understood, the 5-in-1 strips test for everything except ammonia which in a newly set up tank is probably THE most important thing you can test for. As mentioned, look for liquid tests and I would suggest getting a liquid master test kit (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH). The master kit won't be that much more than the ammonia kit by itself, they are more accurate and will last much longer for less money overall.
