Got a new green sev a few days ago. Only a young'n. The thing is he/she's just terrified. It's in my quarantine tank on it's own, with a couple of pieces of wood and a few plants (so there are places to hide).
After a few days it's still just quivering on the bottom in terror. I'm thinking of putting some neons in as dither fish. What do you think ?

Any others ideas to help it settle in.

Q tank is a 16 Gal, and the sev is only a couple of inches so the tank is ample room for it.

They can be nervous fish, especially when young. They dont take kindly to a change in their circumstances, they are good at sulking  It will take time for it to adjust to its surroundings, adding a few dithers might help to make it more confident. Leave the lights out for a few days too just till it settles.

Ditto Minxy's advice really, nice bushy plants to hide and some sort of cave, I remember when I first had my 2 rotkeils one spent most of his time hidden in a log with the turtle. My new little gold like to hide in a bushy plant or in a rock cave, he is getting bolder by the day.

My adult severus sulks with any change, I hate to see it but its just something they do by the sounds of things.... I really need to do a rescape on my tank as some plants are a bit straggly and Im worried about her reaction that it puts me off doing it...

if u havent read this the thing severum have is that they can be really skittish and/or shy, therefore when u first introduce one he/she will hide for weeks until it adjusts to its new tank/owner, btw full grown severums r the real fish, they are just 8" but look tall and compressed is a show off fish, mine actually lets me pet him on its body/head, but i just had to let him take food out of my hand first then eventually it would nip my hand for no reason, they are awesome fish, wont jump like oscars

Just to update ...
.... I was so concerned about this particular fish stressing itself to death that I put him in my main 80 gallon tank in the end, taking some risk at introducing disease I know !

Anyway, he settled in amazingly quickly, and seemed peaceful and was exploring the tank within hours. He ate well this evening and seems to have settled in remarkably.

He obviously just didn't like my QT tank. Something about it just spooked him big time. maybe it was the company of other fish in my main tank which calmed him down. Who knows !

Anyway, all seems fine now. Thanks to all who responded.

Glad to hear he's doing ok, it is a bit of a risk but i would have done the same :good: keep a close eye on him as they can be prone to white spot.

spoon

Yes, I am keeping a very close eye. I am dreading an outbreak of disease in such a big tank.
