hi

just wondering, when a tank gets some fresh water added after a clean out does it affect the fish at all?

i mean a sudden surge of cold water into the tank must be a bit disturbing for them especialy if they need certain temerature parameters

what do you all do?

heat the water seperatly?

spend hours adding it bit by bit so the temp evens out?

just pour it all in and hope for the best?

Really depends on how sensative the fish are I suppose. I usually do a 40-50% water change on my mbuna tank with cold water (drops it 4-6 degrees) and they quite enjoy it, they usually spawn shortly after a water change. For many species in the wild, rain triggers spawning.

u could slowly hose it in my fish even tho just general tropical seem 2 like the drop in temp as im adding the cold water 2
so i dont think u have 2 much problem with urs longs i'd imagine ur not adding any more than a 50% water change that is :)

Is it not possible for you to use the water tap that has both hot and cold water? I hook a garden hose up to my kitchen faucet and run the exact temp into the tank so that there is no real temp fluctuation.

It depends on the fish, a lot of small fish like neons and guppys etc aren't so fond of cold water changes, while a lot of larger fish are fine with them and sometimes even enjoy them- as others have said, doing cold water changes is sometimes a good way to encourage certain types of fish to spawn.
But i personally always try and match the temp of the new water to the temp of the old water in the tank, since my livebearers don't seem too fond of cold water changes and the fry don't like them either- the danio's and goldfish seem to enjoy them though  .
