my other half did a water change for me last week after receiving strict instructions about temperature, filter cleaning and tapsafe. However he misunderstood and added enough tapsafe for the whole tank to each of the 4! buckets of water he added.

The fish looked unhappy and 2 have ragged tails so I decided to test the water and do a water change today. That's when I he told me what he had done!

The result is a ph level which has always been about 8.2 now being only 7.4.

The tapsafe made the water more acidic and therfore lowered the ph level.

Bearing in mind that I have had these fish for 13 months now and the level has always been about 8.2 should I just leave the tank as it is and let the levels retun to what they were with each water change?
(It is a week since he added the overdose of tapsafe so they have been in the 7.4 ph water for a week.)

p.s. 7.4 is the level after a 40% water change - I dread to think what it was before! Think I won't ask him to do a water change again!

He should have told you when he realised what had happened.
Fish can take a lot of things but sudden ph drops can result in stressed and sick fish. All you should do now are small partial water changes each day of 20% to get the levels slowly back where they should be. :)
