Tanning From Wood...

i think a tank can look really good with tannin in it so go for it and you might be suprised..........

that's what i thought actually like it adds atmosphere or something )

i pre soaked my wood in boiling water to help it sink and to release the tannins but i kinda wish i had more tannins in my tank after seeing a few at lfs that looked really cool with stained water. it does add atmosphere and looks really natural, some people will disagree and insist the water needs to be crystal clear but i like it a bit dirty...... oooh just realised what i just wrote " i like it a bit dirty " well who doesnt? hope my wifes not reading this...... or actually maybe i do..... lol sorry just went off topic there in my own world

i think tanks look good with tannins leached from wood, peat, cattappa leaves etc. a lot of people, including me, pay for stuff to leach tannins into the water to create soft, blackwater type set ups, very good for certain fish like all species of betta, a lot of gouramis and anabantoids especially chocolate gouramis!
depends what sort of fish your keeping, but on a whole as long as they aren't hard water fish it will do no harm!
