Hi all,

Tank has just finished cycling with Danios in just over 2 weeks!!

So now I'm looking to get some more fish! What would people suggest as suitable tank mates for the Danios?

I like colourful fish, but maybe a bit bigger than the danios. Hoping to build a good community tank, so some that will be future proof would be handy too! Am planning to get an Otto, or algae cleaner similar as well, so would need to be compatible with that!!

On my possible list so far:
  • Guppies
  • Mollies
  • Angel Fish
  • Rummy Nose Tetra
But am open to more suggestions!

Thanks in advance all

Adam

Did you use a filter from an already establish tank or something?
Perhaps ive missed a topic or something :S
If not i doubt your tank cycled in two weeks... It normally takes between 6-8 weeks when using fish, then around 6months to fully mature. I would't get anymore fish for another 6weeks if the whole set-up is new. :)

Mine just took around 2 weeks on a fishless cycle, couldnt do it with fish that quick

And also you will have to add fish very very slowly as the bio load increases to allow the bacteria to build up more!

Hmm, well I only have nitrIte test kit, but that has now gone down and reading zero, so as far as I can tell it's cycled!!

Yeah, I know I need to add slowly to allow the bacteria to grow further, but thanks for your reply Kris

I will get hold of the other test kits asap, but the only other way this could have happened as far as i can see is that all the nitrifying bacteria have died...but this shouldn't have happened with the fish "feeding" them

Any suggestions for when I have got the all clear from the tests??

Just keep in mind that your tank is only cycle for the fish you have in it. When you add more fish you will start a mini cycle again and have to go through the same process as at the start.

Yep Yep,

Please note my response to Kris B

Cycling issues aside for the moment...

What size is the tank? :)

Thank you MH, an on-topic response!

The tank is a Juwel Rekord 80...so approx 80 litres. Also have couple pieces of bogwood and few live plants in there too.

But if i had of just missed the point of cycling out, you would have thought that your tank is cycled still and have been adding more fish. It's important to correct you first then answer your questions. :)

Danios are active, fast and nippy. I don't think any of these fish are likely to be "happy" in a tank with danios. I would go for tankmates a little tougher and less long-finned.

Some options:
Small loaches (zebra, queen)
Bristlenose or Clown plec
Tougher dwarf cichlids like kribs or checkerboards (probably not rams)

Basically fish that don't mind a little chaos or can keep things in line.

It would be good for The-Wolf (our resident danio guy) to chime in with some suggestions too if he sees this thread...

Thanks Siamese, I was not having a dig at you. You were first to respond, and greatly appreciated.

I am only basing my "cycled" assumption on my nitrItes test shooting up then returning to zero after these 2 weeks, but am getting a master test tonight so can be sure. I should also have mentioned in my orginal post that I was already aware of the need to add fish slowly due to increasing bio-load and all of that, but that was my own fault! :)

Although, you say correct me first then answer my questions....you didnt *technically* answer my question :p ;)
