I've just bought a 50 gallon tank and i'm planning on moving my 2 firemouths in there, any suggestions on suitable tankmates? I was thinking it might be nice to add some more firemouths and catfish but would like some other cichlids too. Also, how do i tell if my firemouths are male or female? One is bigger than the other but both have similar colouring, the biggest is around 3 inches, the other slightly smaller. Both are greyish with dark stripes and orange throats, both have irridescent blue spots but one does seem more dominant than the other.

a Blue acara could do well, a convict would do well. you could put in a severum. there the basics, check the fish indexout, you may see somethin there you like.

Angelfish are prime tankmates for a firemouth. And to even it out put a bottomfeeder in like a pictus or a plec.

I was hoping that the firemouths might spawn eventually though, would'nt angel fish eat the babies?

Aren't convicts aggressive discusangel? I heard they were, i do like them though. I have had a look at the fish index but it's not that clear on compatability.

Angelfish not good for firemouths if you plan on keeping the spawn, and instead of the occasionally predatory pictus, how about some cories and some medium sized tetras, like silver dollars.

yeh only when beeding thought just like firemouths. one female would be great with your 2 firemouths. if you want to breed them then there almost be left alone.

O.k thanks, one female convict is a definate maybe. How many firemouths do you think i could put in that tank with one confict and a few catfish?

i think this would be fine

3 Female Firemouths and 1 Female Convict OR 2 Female Firemouths and 2 Female Convicts
with
1 Pim Pictus
2 Bristlenose

make sure lots of caves at least 4 for terrotories.

the blue acras will bully the firemouths, but not overly, just enough to keep them in their place. convicts are just plain mean, but lovely fish. the angels and the firemouths get on fine. calling a pictus aggressive seems a bit hard, it may well eat a fish that is small enough, but it is often as surprised as the fish it eats when it happens.

silver dollars would work too, but be warned if you have a acara, silver dollars can suffer very badly.

male and female firemouths look quite different, take a look on a google to see what i mean

finally you have a 50 gallon tank, firemouths reach over 6 inches, the blue acara reach over seven, a pictus cat again over 7 inches, silver dollars often over 5 and a bristlenose getting into the same size range.

Yikes i don't know what to do now! I don't know if a have a pair, they don't look overly different apart from in size, one is a bit paler than the other , but they do act like a pair. The big one used to keep the smaller one in the corner but now the smaller one spends a lot of time lurking in a dense plant and the bigger one chases the other fish away from it. I think i might just make the new tank a firemouth tank with a few catfish. Can someone give me an idea of acceptable numbers?
