Hello i have a 4ft 350L tank up stairs in my room. Ive had it there for a year now with no problems for a few days now when ever you stand in the room or go near the tank the floor creaks around it. it has only just started happening. I have just bought a 3ft slate shelter which is going into the tank. This will make it heaveyer ?? I have been told by the seller the water will be displaced so it won't be heaveyer. So when i put it in the tank the water will come out and be displaced.

Also i have just bought a 5L bottle of water and have 2 xs 2L bottles the 2 2L bottles are being used has diy yest bottles which are workign but has anyone got a mix for a 5L Bottle ???
And is it ok to have 2 2L bottles of diy yest and a 5L ????
Or will the fish get c02 posing ???

Im scared the tank is gonna go though the floor because the floor has started cracking.... Has anyone else got a big tank up stairs ??

Slate will make it heavier, it is denser than water, it will displace some water but overall there will be an increase in mass.

It's highly unlikely that your fish will get CO2 poisoning from DIY CO2, to be honest it's not really worth using.

I'd be worried about a 350L tank upstairs to be honest, especially if you never got a structural engineer to check things out first.

So best thing to do is send the slate back ?

Ive just messeged the seller and gotthis back

" as for the water displacement yes it will displace a bit of water you may need to take a litre or two out maybe not that much really, they will only weigh around 8 to 10kgs combined
each section is 16" wide x 10" front to back and the height depends on the sizes of the caves you have so overall for 2 sections it will be 32" so its just under 3ft "

Here is a link to my tank

So it is gonna go though in time ???

Nobody but a structural engineer can tell you if it will go or not, there are too many variables, but the standard is 1.5KN per square metre and I'd bet that your tank exceeds this, what's the foot print of the tank?

1 litre of water = 1kg. So you'd be displacing 2kg of water with 8-10kg of slate. So yes, it does add a bit of weight. However, considering you've already got over half a tonne up there, an extra 6kg is hardly going to tip the balance.

That being said, if the floor is creaking I would be VERY worried and would get someone out asap to give their professional opinion on the situation. In the meantime, can you reduce the water level in the tank? Say, by half? What stock do you have?

Can you move the tank downstairs?

a paludarium ??

And i have the tank right up against the wall. Because i thought that would of been the strongest point.

I life in a flat its a house confereted into 2 flats. I have 3 common catfish ( small ) and a silver shark and 2 talking catfish.

And im very worried

I wouldn't risk it. Your house won't be cheap to fix if your tank goes through the floor. Move the tank downstairs if you can.

You need it running perpendicular to the joists as well, get a structural engineer in.

Or could always sell the tank on ebay ??? Cheap LOL
Its been there for a year and havn't gone though but saying that it sounds like im a lucky guy that it hasn't gone.

A kind of half fish tank half terrarium. You could keep your current fish (depending on the size of your shark) and cut the weight dramatically due to less water. I would return the slate.

This might sound real silly. But why has it been ok for a year and havn't done anything ? I am gonna get rid of half the water then stic it on ebay i think. Then try and move house and get a new tank. Just gonna be hard to see my prid and joy go

It's highly unlikely that your tank will fall through the floor, what will happen is that if 1 of the joists move too much it will stress the glass on the tank and crack it, not quite the same outcome but still same the same result, expensive fix and dead fishes. Check what the problem is, it may only be a loose nail in the floor board.

Ive just put the tank on ebay because i was so scared it was gonna go though the flour because of the comments.
There was a fire be for we moved in and everything have ment to be replaced. And had to get a fire certificate be for letting anyone move in () us ) which the flat has got.
So the best thing to do is get rid anyways ? Instead of paying out loads for the damage it will make ? I did have ti in the middle of the room for around 4 months then moved it to the side of the room against the wall because was worried on both times nothing ever happened. The tank and fish are my pride and joy and really didn't wanna get rid but if it is gonna make damage maybe its for the best ?

if it were me, i would take the carpet up, go down a DIY center, pickup enough 18mm chip board to do the whole room then lay it on top of the existing flooring. but i gots mad skills.
