I'm in the process of looking for a new tank setup. The two tanks i'm looking at are the Juwel Rio 180 (approx 40"x16"x20"), and the rena Panorama 100 (100cm x 44.5cm x 47.5cm Bowfront). The Rio is 180l, but for the Rena they quote 2 figures, total volume 210l and usefull volume 140l. What's the difference between total and useful? Which tank would you go for?

I think it means actual water volume after gravel rocks wood e.t.c. seems excessive though so may be wrong.

total volume refers to the amount of air that container holds
usefull volume refers to amount of water held, after substrate etc has been added.

I see. So for the Rio i guess the 180l is without any substrate etc.

Go to The_Wolfs website (in his sig) and click on the tankmaster link. If you enter your tank dimensions and how deep you want your gravel it will give all sorts of useful info including estimated actual water capacity.

cool site. The only thing, as the rena tank is a bowfront, this will afftect the calculations. I'm not sure if the 44.5cm measurment is the minimum or maximum distance.
