Tank Temperature

Wow this heat is really something...

Tank was at 31 degrees an hour ago, so i put a 500ml frozen water bottle in it.
30 mins later the bottle was completely melted and at tank temperature and the temperature dropped by a whopping 0.5 degree!

So its now sitting at 30.5 degrees. Is there any point in trying another bottle, or will i need about 8?

Meh, i'll be a typical brit and beg for the hot weather and then moan when it comes

The bottle may be doing more harm than good.

The constant temperature swings could be stressing the fish...

Yep. Ice just isnt an effective method for cooling tanks unless they are tiiiiiiiny tanks. Temperature swings of just a few *C do no harm at all though.

Dealing with 32.7*C on the marine fish system at work has not been fun lol.

All I can recommend is the use of fans, and lots of them.

Erm, i dont know if you actually read my post but there hasnt been a temperature swing and the fish are not stressed.
The tank has been at 30 - 31 degrees day and night for the past 3 days. And when adding the bottle it went down 0.5 degrees; hardly a swing.

Will take the crit onboard though, i thought adding ice bottles was actually supposed to help.

I understand that it can cause a temperature fluctuation but i was watching closely, but it didnt actually do any good so i wont be trying it again.

Better get some fans!

my cichlid tank was upto about 35/6 degrees the other night. heater got stuck on and i noticed the light when i was trying to get to sleep. no fish lost so i personally woulnd worry to much unless it gets to 35 degrees or so (freshwater im talking about)

I would get large fluctuations when I lived in Oz and it never caused a problem with the fish. I suppose they must get fluctuations in the wild.

I mentioned the bottle trick on here recently and was told with bigger tanks you would have to use several bottles.

Well yeah, thats what i read a lot aswell so i thought i would try it.

Water changes with cooler water every 2 hours are more effective then bottles, close the curtains open the windows and add lots of fans. I have 2 tanks 13 litres in total and they are by the window and get direct sunlight for 4 hours in the morn but as the window is always open they are 29C peak and 28C during most of the day and that is what the heater is set at 27.5C strictly but thermostats are rarely that accurate.
