Tank Stocking For Rio 240

Hi,

I setup my tank around 2 and half months ago, had it running 1 week before adding fish; i added 7 neon tetras, 6 glowlight tetras, 6 zebra danios and 2 black widows. All went well, fish were healthy, water stats okay. Around a month later i added 2 silver shark, again all well water stats okay, but still no ammonia spikes. I was told that this was my tank cycled; so i bought 2 clown loaches. After a couple of days fish started to show symptoms of white spot so i started to treat for that, the clown loaches never recovered from this and within 2 weeks and half weeks they both died along with 1 on my silver shark.

Im still treating for whitespot mixed with pimafix so it will be a while before i look at getting some more fish but i want to know what you think i should get?

I was wanting some slightly bigger fish, the tank looks very empty at the moment. I know the silver shark will grown and i will be looking at re-homing him; however i live in a remote area and rehoming him just now may not be the best thing for him.

defo rehome the shark as they prefer to be in groups and the tank just isnt big enough. the clown loaches also get too big and need more room and i bet the ich came in with these as they are prone to this disease, did you quarentine any fish before adding...?
its well worth buying a small tank for this reason it doesnt have to be anything special just a cheap 2nd hand one will do
you could try angels but buy them smallish so they can grow up with the smaller tetras as larger angels may well just eat them!!! after 2 and a half months i assume your tank is cycled by the fish in method so dont go adding too many fish at once as the filter will have to catch up on the extra bioload and give it a couple of weeks inbetween new stock.
remember most fish that will fit in another fishes mouth may well be eaten, its nature....
i would also up the numbers of what you already have to see the best out of them, nothing beats a large group of neons in my eyes and this is what ill be adding to my tank as soon as i have the room or maybe cardinals.

I have a 25l storage box that i will be putting a filter and heater in next time i get new fish to quarantine them for a few weeks. My girlfriend doesnt like the look of angels so i think that will be a no go. I can get some discuss young from a breeder i know; do you think it would be okay to add some of them?

Definitely no with regards to the discus, do some reading if you're still interested in them but they're one of the more difficult fish to keep requiring not only pristine water but different parameters too (higher temperature etc.).

Why not have a look at some gouramis like opaline, gold, threespot. And some bottom dwellers such as kuhli or yoyo loaches, Bolivian rams and/or corydoras catfish?

young discus require a glass bottom tank no sand or gravel due to the fact that any poo etc needs to be cleaned up daily from what ive been told when they are adult this can be changed but still need top care. they are beautifull fish and i would love some myself but just dont have enough time to care for them. angels look quite similar to discus but with long fins and not so rounded bodies a nice group of corys would be great in a tank this size and then as people have put if you want something largish but not angels or discus then gouramis are ok also some ciclids. just be carefull with those big mouths though......
