I got a 2ft tank that i want to setup for an axololt or a newt community. But im not having much luck into letting the parents letting me keep it
But anyway, ive measured up and know where id want it. Theres a cabinet under my tv in the room thats like 22 inches. The tank sticks over the edges by an inch on each side. Ive got the polysterene sheets to put under the tank to even it out but was wondering if its alright to have the tank hanging over the edge by a lil bit?

i honestly wouldnt risk it might only be a small tank but you would be amazed at the damed that amount of water can do for me risk out weighs the pluses

Unless it was empty of water, I wouldn't do it. An aquarium is built to support the weight a certain way and having the edges hang off unevenly distributes the weight which can allow the pressure to break the glass and make a big mess.

Definitely a no. Not worth the risk. Ideally, you need a cabinet built purposefully for fish tanks anyway as they are built level and with the stresses and strains that a full tank places on it in mind.

:good:

No good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The outside of the tank must be supported ALL the way around the tank. I have no idea how many gallons your tank will have but I would suggest a piece of 3/4" plywood that extended past the outside limit of the tank ALL the way around would solve the problem. Stressing the silicone joints is just asking for a clean up lesson and, I would not be a bit surprised if the need for a clean up irritated your parents somewhat!

I'm not saying it's recommended, but I've done it with a 2.5 foot 29 gallon tank. It was overhanging about 3-4 inches on either side for a couple months. Eventually I got a piece of plywood like someone above recommended. A couple months later I got another piece of furniture that fully supported the bottom.

My tank is the kind that is supposed to have support all the way around, but does not require the polysterene sheets under it. It has a molded plastic frame around the perimeter of the bottom that supported the tank and held the glass up a bit, eliminating the need for the sheet under it.

I have put my 15gl 2ft on a cabinet that was already built when we brought the house. Its like a built in feature and its made of strong hard wood, and we have had no issues.

But if its hanging over, I dont think I would risk it.

Also, its under the tv, wont all the noise cause stress for the fish?

If it's in an area that you don't want to risk getting very wet don't do it. If the tank has fish that you are really fond of don't do it.

That being said, I have seen so many breeders fishrooms with poorly supported tanks, hanging off ends of racks, held in the middle by a couple of steel bars, the list is endless. Once in a great while a tank goes out, one 10 or 20 gallon out of a dozen or more makes for a wet floor that needs to be mopped, 10, 20, or 50+ fry out of perhaps 500 lost, and a new tank needs to be set up.

mmmmm, ive heard many people do it before too!
i havent even said im allowed to set it up yet anyways lol. I might have ago at asking ,later on,if i can get soem wood from my DT department at school to give the inch hanging off some support.
Thanks for the help anyway, youve given me something to think about! BTW it would be for an axololt or a fire bellied nwet community so the tank doesnt need to be full. The tank holds 15 gals so the same as someone mentioned above :D

i have had a 3ft 20gal tank set up for almost a year now hanging over the side and inch and its fine
