TOS is right; I'm pretty good about gravel cleaning and still when I changed my substrate last year it was awful in there.

If you're overfeeding, the fish will still eat the food, but it'll come out in their poo undigested, and then will rot in the gravel in a way that 'normal' fish poo won't.

Is the surface of your water being broken constantly by your filter? if not, the surface will develop a scummy oil like film which can smell.

Sure, hon, you can pop a bit of carbon in any filter. If you can not find inserts specifically made for your filter, buy some loose carbon and a sleeve to put it in and tie it up with a small bit of fishing line. Pop it in, and in a few hours your tank should smell a lot better. Be careful to not use to much now, yeah, cuz it can deplete your o2. I use about a teaspoon per gallon. I also have a bubbler,too. If your not seeing waves on the surface of your water, drop your water level until you do, because like Tizer said, the film that develops does stink

All sorted now I bought a power head to break the surface and put the filter outlet higher which also helps, as for high protien foods that's all I have seeing as I keep snakeheads and plecos, the guy at the lfs told me to feed them (wice a day but I think he's wrong lol so I only feed them a small amount everyday thanks for the advice very helpful
