Tank Smells

Hi, just noticed my tank is starting to smell abit, all the fish are fine, water quality is perfect, I perform weekly water changes and there is nothing in the tank which is rotting or dying including plants, I feed my fish twice a day and they eat most if it what am I doing wrong?? Am I feeding them too much??

i think you are overfeeding. They only need to be fed once a day at most. Fish can survive a fare while without food.

Agreed, try cutting back on feeding to once per day, or feed twice, but less and see if there is an improvement.

Disagree with one the above, many people feed their fish twice a day with no problems, they simply half the amount they would be fed in one go.

It smells of fishy water, its hard to explain I can only smell it when I first walk into my bedroom sometometimes maby its because the doors and windows are always shut???

i feed mine once every 2-3 days.

No, that shouldn't have a lot of bearing on the matter. I have 3 tanks in a very small room, with the door closed most of the time and it doesn't smell. High protein foods combined with a bit of over feeding will make the tank smell. You could also do a good gravel vac and see if it helps but I'm sure you will notice the difference after a good water change and cutting back on food to(as I stated above) once a day or twice a day but less food.

As far as i know green algae also known as cyanobacteria gives the tank a fishy smell. But since you don't mention having any of it i guess its out of the question.

Mine used to smell a lot more when I had a gravel substrate. Then I switched to sand and it disappeared. When I was cleaning the gravel before I stored it, I thought I might pass out from the horrid smell.

Popping in a new bit of carbon should take care of it, regardless of what is causing it. I am a chronic overfeeder ,too, I'll admit it. I simply can not resist a wriggling, begging fish! So I buy lots and lots of carbon and do lots and lots of water changes.

Chances are if you have gravel substrate, there may just have been a build up of rotten food.

I can't think of what else it could be other than rotting food, undiscovered dead fish, etc

I clean the gravel every time I do a water change, its got me thinking

I did too, but it's impossible to get it completely clean, honeslty.
