I recently went on holiday only to return and find that all of my tank stocking has died except for one
Penguin tetra.

I'm looking for ideas of what I can put in this tank; some good easy to look after plants, shrimp or some small nice looking fish

Ps the tank is properly cycled and has been up and running for at least a year.

All ideas welcome :D

Many thanks, M4

What size is your tank, and is your water hard or soft?

Is the lone penguin tetra still in there? As many of your bacteria will have died off, and left just enough to support that one fish, and you'll need to restock extremely slowly.

I should probably add its a 30 litre tank that measures
30 cm wide
20 cm deep
30 cm tall

I currently have sand as a substrate but can change if necessary

Ps the water is quite hard where I live but this is is easy for me to sort

With a tank of that size, your really very limited in your choices....you'll need to rehome the penguin, they're not suitable for a 30l tank.

Six or seven guppies or Endlers (males only), celestial pearl or dwarf emerald danios, or a single dwarf puffer.

What method would you use to reduce the hardness?

We have a home built water softener. It's like a Britta filter it's a large ion exchange resin with an activated charcoal base to remove light pollutants

Okay...those kids of water softeners don't produce water you can use for fish. They exchange calcium for sodium, so the water behaves as if it's softer, but the total amount of dissolved minerals stays the same.

It's calcium and magnesium ions that cause water hardness, usually their formation of calcium and magnesium carbonate.
The removal of these ions removes the hardness.

I'm not here to argue, I would just like fish or srimp selection ideas.

rehoming the tetra is a must a local fish shop will most likely take him just phone up first bcause you may be turned away as for fish a shoal of 6 guppys endlers guppys celestial pearl danios would do or you could have 1 betta or dwarf gourami and nothing else or you could have a shrimp tank although you will need to have a sponge filter and mint water quality for that
