if i want to take all the plants out of my tank and add a bit more sand and add some more large rocks etc shall i do it with the fish in or shall i take them out?

if i need to take them out what shall i do with them?

Place all of the plants and fish into one of your water change buckets and put them back when you are done rearranging the tank. Don't make this any harder than you need to.

+1. I thought it would be disastrously stressful when rescaping and regraveling my tank, but the bulk of the stress certainly fell on my shoulders, rather than the poor fish

I do it at least once a year, to give the gravel a proper clean and tidy plants. I have a plastic storage box that is deep enough to have the filter and heater going to keep the fish happy while I clean the tank. Like water changes, the fish soon get used to it and are visably happier after the change. Not that unhappy before, I should add.
