Has anyone on these forums ever had a tank in their bedroom? I need to know if it is really noisy or if there are ways to reduce the noise a tank makes. The only space I have for a decent sized 80gallon tank is in my bedroom, so my question is will a tank that size be reasonably noisy? Is it possible to fill the tank up a bit more than normal so when the filter is adding the water back to the tank you wont hear the splashing?

Because I know heaters are silent and an airstone can be switched off overnight, but just curious about how loud a filter would be for a 80gallon.

Thanks, Rob

I have all my fish tanks in my room. Most are quiet, however I keep most of the water levels right above the filter output as it helps keep the splashing quite. Most of my air pumps are quiet also so I just leave those on all the time. I have heaters running of course those are no noise producing, and I also have a powerhead which also makes no noise barely. I have had fish tanks in my room practically all my life, so I am quite used to the sounds of my fish tanks. I find it quite relaxing to have my fish in my room, and also it's more fun to watch them, cause i'm in there more often because of doing homework and that from school. So that's my experience with fish tanks in the bedroom.

Oh and by the way I have a 2.5gallon, 20gallon long, 20gallon high, and a 55 gallon tank.

Awsome that might just convince me to get one for my room. Thats what I was thinking, topping the water level up so the filter does not make any splashes, so basically the thing will be making noise is the actual motor for the filter which i really dont think will make much noise at all

I have my 29 in my room. it depends on the type of filter you get and if you are sensitive to noise. My dad who doesn't like any noise at all makes me shut my door most of the way and he's in another room across the hall. It doesn't bother me at all, it really depends on the person and type of filter.

Well I guess the bigger the tank I get the bigger more filtration it will need thus making more noise. How do I find out which filter types and/pr brands work the quietest?

Im guessing I would first have to make a decision on the size of the tank? Well Its going to be either one of these two sizes below.

* 99x47x60cm 215 liters

or

* 123x46x67cm 285 liters

Just get an eheim cannister. The classics run silently.

And you get used to most noises in your room. I have my large reef tank and a 2 foot SW tank in my bedroom, both have sumps so the water is contantly falling down the pipework and being pumped back up. No problems with these (though I have designed them to be as quiet as possible).

In a 90 gallon, the only noise would be from the filtration. Make sure you get a good brand, like Eheim, and you wil not hear anything.

i've a 10gal on my bedside table. you easily get used to what little noise there is. although if the water levels dropped i always wake up desperate for the loo! :rolleyes:

also assuming your bedroom is upstairs (of course possible that it isn't) it's worth considering that an 80gal tank is pretty heavy. Unless you are a structural engineer and have carried out a full survey of your house you can't guarantee that your floor and walls can support that large a tank. Obviously the consequences of the tank falling through the floor do not bear thinking about so get advice from a trained professional before you go ahead.

Ill look into them thanks. I really wanty to get this, money isnt an issue and space isnt if its in my bedroom. I just dont really want to get it and then not be able to sleep with it. Because thats only going to mean I have to more than likely sell it.

Also, which filter would I get for a 90g? Out these which would be the quietest?

Hang-On, Internal, External
