Is it possible to keep a fully stocked freshwater tropical tank in a conservatory?

Normally the conservatory is unheated during the night and can get pretty cold, it obviously won't freeze, and gets fairly warm when the house is unoccupied during working hours in the summer. Due to the design of the windows it is not possible to leave them open when no one is in.

Maybe in winter we would have to leave the heat on low.

What winter low and summer high temperatures are you talking about here? Theoretically, a quality heater could keep the temp high enough in the winter, but if the ambient temp is really low, you'll spend a lot on electricity for the heater.

I'd be more concerned about how hot it got during the day! We have a conservatory off the end of our house and it must hit 40C during the summer and temperatures like that will heat up your tank, making conditions a little uncomfortable for the fish. Plus won't all that sunlight encourage algae? Didn't I read somewhere that it's not a good idea to site a tank in direct sunlight?

I'm in Hampshire and my south facing Conservatory reaches 120 deg in summer when the doors and windows are closed in July and August.
The fish will fry.
