At present I have a Juwel Rio 180 that I have taken over from my wife. It has a varied selection of inhabitants, some came with the tank when we bought it, but most have been added ourselves.
Although I have never had my own tank as such before, my father had a lovely set up for many years and so I have always had a soft spot for a nice tank. As I have always liked Bala's I have decided that if I am going to look after a tank, it might as welll be one that I want!
Soooo....I am looking for some ideas and help in setting up a 6 foot tank suitable for a few Bala's, 4 would do nicely I think.
The space where the tank will go is just under 7 foot wide, so 6 foot would be the obvious choice, although I could go up to 80 inches if I wanted. Should I go for a 24 X 24 inch or could I make do with 18 inch deep?
I want to have as little hardware in the tank as possible so have been looking at the Eheim Pro II filters with built in heaters, but they are recomended for upto 600 litres, is that pushing it to far? I supose the other thing to think about is having a second filter running at the same time as a safety feature incase one breaks down. Although I dont need to set up on a shoestring, I doubt I could afford to buy a couple of Pro II's.
I have bought one Bala already and will probably add 2 or 3 more pretty soon to keep him company, so I want to start sorting things out now. I am hoping I will have 4-6 months before they outgrow their present home. I am thinking of adding a external filter first to help the Juwel cope. As I am a carpenter by trade I am going to make a cabinet myself.
Sorry for rambling on so long, feel free offer any advice!

Regards,
Paul.

The 24" back to front width is a great bonus when keeping fast moving free swimming fish like balas and the extra height of a 24" tall tank means more natural looking displays using top middle and bottom dwelling fish can be achieved. Go for the 6x2x2, you wont be disapointed.

personally I'm planning on keeping 3 in a 72"x18"x22"
I'm not expecting any problems.

I would definately back CFC on this one. I have 6 in a 6 x 18 but am moving them all into a 6 x 2 x 2 to give them better room. It gives you so much more room and water (150 gallons instead of 85 gallons).
