When working out the tank volume from the dimensions, how exactly is it done?

Does the volume calculator at the top of this site take into account the thickness of the glass? I'm assuming the substrate isn't, since it's a variable.
Also, when wanting to work out the height, should you really measure from where the water line will be? My tank is 12" tall, but the water surface will really only be at about the 11" mark.

Length x Width x Height
Divide x 1000
And total is how many litres the tank is

Length - measure from end to end
Width - as above
Height - measure from base to the waterline
