One of my friends, has only been into this hobbie for like 3 months..but he started out with a 200 gallon tank!..and today he lost everything in his tank.. he lost and yellow belly tang, flame angle, cleaner wrasse, 2 clowns, a Imperator Angel, 2 cleaner shrimp, and bunch of snails, and a bunch of crabs.. this all happened becasue his salinaty went to high and killed all of his backteria, and his nitrates when soooo high! at least thats what we think happened!..sooo sad! his fish were amazing!

:rip: :byebye:

OUCH! That's alot of life to be lost. Did this all happen in one punch? Or did it happen slowly? If it happened slowly he propably could have found a way to get it under control. Maybe doing some water changes and while doing that add a bit more R/O water to bring down the salinity and bring down the nitrates. I think thats what water changes do, or am I getting confused with bringing down the nitrites -_-

ive got to say i wouldnt like to be in his shoes. see this is were nano's have the advantage for people who start because if things go wrong then they arent gonna loose major livestock. although people advise against nano's for begginers i think big tanks have advantages and disadvantages over nanos

ya he's pity upset/ mad.. the fish kind of died all around the same time..2 nights ago they were all fine, except he was treating them for ich, and the next day his yellow belly was gone, and so were his clowns.. he did a water check and saw what was wrong..he was in the process of doing a water change, and his flame angle, and shripms died.. like houre later his crabs, and snails were all upside down dead, the cleaner wrasse was dead in a rock..don't know when that died.. the last to go was his Imperator Angel.. though he was going to save him..afer the water change he started to come around a little, he was swimming around more, and seamed to be gettign better..but late tht night like 12:30 it had died... :-( suckes

i'am tryen to convince him to stay with this wonderful hobbie thoguh!

Can I ask how his Salinity rose to a dangerous level & what it was

Can I ask how his Salinity rose to a dangerous level & what it was

for that to happen i guess there must have been an underlying problem, the salinity must have been pretty high and i dout that would have been through evap alone.

The reason I ask is becasue I returned from a 10 day buisness trip recently to find my auto top up had jammed & no fresh water top up had taken place at all, my water level was way low & the salinity was way high

but...

I lost no stock & a month or so on my livestock show no sighs of any problems

well he actually wne out of town for a week ir to..and he had his light oin a timing system..something happened ad they were left on the whole time he was gone..his water just evaperatedlike 1 and a half inces..and the salinity was a little over 1.030  and you all know sosposed to be around 1.022 !!

ouch ..ya i hope it doesn't happen to me with my new tank that i have just started cycling!

TBH Bomber I really dont think that a hike in salinity killed your friends livestock as I know from experince that my own tank when ever I have been away or Ill has had major increrases in salinity drops in ph, hikes in nitrates etc & have never suffered a loss

Now I know all tanks differ, maybe his livestock was not in the best of health & may have been more prone to problems but it may be worth him investigating something other than the salinity & nitrates just for him to know what went wrong

He didnt have any Cucumbers, annemmones, puffers etc in the tank that could have poisoned everything if they died did he ?

well the high salinity killed his backteria in his filters and then his nitrates went very very high..over 100! so he's prity shour thats what happened.. but i'am not 100% if thats exactly what happened...

and his fish seamed very healthy...but his yellow belly had ich..he told me that he got rid of the ich.. but i don't kow i'am only going form what he told me..

and no he didn't have anything in his tank like nemes,puffers..nuthing that could of poisined his fish...

we checked everyhting else in his tank.. and nuthing else was high.. but if anyone else has any susgestions i'll pass them along
