Tank Cleaning

Hi all

Tank 38 US galls...... Fluval 305 ext filter

In the very near future i am going to recape/clean my tank its 2 years old now and needs attention. The fish will be moved to a spare tank with a properly seeded internal filter so i have no problem there, my concern is keeping the bacteria in the main tank filter good and alive as the recape/clean may take a day or two. I realise with no amonia source from the fish the bacteria will soon die even tho the filter will be running constantly during the clean, so my first question will adding pure amonia be enough to keep the filter good ...second question HOW MANY DROPS daily do you think would be sufficient for my tank size. This would be my prefered route if possible as its quick and easy or is there any otherway of doing it.

I seem to remember from an earlier thread Homebase Diy sell amonia can anybody confirm this or suggest any other source

according to the aquarium calculator, you'd need 7.5ml of ammonia (homebase one is fine) for 5ppm

why dont you switch the filter over to the new tank aswell whilst you clean the old one?

Thanks for the reply, i did think about moving the filter but its not really practicable hence the question.You mentioned 7.5 ml is that daily? and what calculator did you use it sounds usefull

At the top of this page there is a calculators link. You need to add the Ammonia when it reaches 0.

are u going to lower the water level right down while u rescape? if so recalculate the ammonia needed or you may overwhelm the filter as 7.5ML of ammonia in the tank which is mostly empty will obviouslt be dozens of ppm
