Hi everyone, been a member for several years, but seldom post. My question pertains to compatibility in my 150 gal. aquarium. I currently have a Tanganyikan community planned. My question is this. If I put Tetracanthus in the tank, will it prohibit me from putting shell dwellers in the tank? Furthermore, would Tetracanthus interact poorly with either Ventralis species or Cyprochromis? I want to consult anyone who knows because at my LFS, most tangs are twice as much as mbuna, haps, peacocks, etc.

Thoughts or recommendations on companions for 2 or 3 tetrancanthus in a 150 would be appreciated.

While I've never kept them myself, from what I can find, they are mildly aggressive. However, they can become highly aggressive when breeding, I also found a reference or two that they will pick on more peaceful species. I don't really have any advice for you due to my lack of experience, but if it were me, I'd only keep one in an aggressive community.

Hope that helps a little.

Never tried to keep them myself because I like to have other tankmates too. From what I have heard a single tret can be fine with other larger tangs, but trets and leilupi will bully shellies. I would stick with Ventralis, nice big shoal of Cyps and some shellies, would be a wonderful tank. A couple of julies may be a better choice for a rock dweller if you want some more variety.
