I am planning on going with a Tang. setup with my 55 gallon, I have kept africans before including tangs. I was just wondering about stocking. I was interested in going with Brichardi and Leleupi. We are very limited to what fish we get here so my options are limited. The only other tang cichlids that are somewhat easy to get are Brevis Shellies. I enjoy the shellies but I don't know how they would do with Brichardi and/or Leleupi. I'm planning on having lots or rocks and caves of course, some small pieces of drift wood and Amazon swords. Thanks for you the replies.

Hi, first of all let me congratulate you for choosing Tangs :band:
Can I ask what the footprint of your tank is ?
Your choice of stock is pretty good, Leleuipi and Brichardi can both handle each others aggression. I wouldn't add the Brevis with either though... They are more than capable of pulling females from the shell and killing them to get at eggs/fry, tank size permitting, if you did want to add a shell dweller you could look at Telmatochromis temporalis "shell", this is a no nonsense Tang that is more than capable of fending off the other fish you have chosen
As for plants I can't really comment as I only have Java Fern and Java Moss, I think they would be ok, most of the Tang folks keep hardy bitter plants, other than them getting dug up I think they would be ok....
Hope this helps......
Cheers, Sean

The dimensions are 48"L x 13"W x 21"H. What would you think about numbers? How many Brichardi and Leleuipi would you suggest for a tank of that size? I wouldn't even mind a Brichardi species tank, I like how they shoal and riase their broods as a community as such. But I guess I couple of pairs of Leleuipi wouldn't hurt.

Nowt wrong with a Brichardi species tank, be nice watching all the generations of fry raising each other :good:
Numbers wise I'm only guessing , 4 Brichardi and 3-4 Leleupi , Enough length and height in the tank for them :good:

Thanks for the suggestions and info. Now the challenge is to get the LFS to get them in. I may start out with 6-8 Juviis and as they pair up just leave two pairs in the tank. I also have another question, I have a friend that has kept a few pairs in a 60 gallon and said that even the fry/parents from the other pairs would help with the raising of all the fry in the tank, regardless of who the parents were. I have seen this tank and it looked really nice, all the brichardi were shoaling together. But I was wondering if this community fry raising behavoir had happend with anyone else?

Never kept them but I'm sure I read on another forum recently that this was the case in this particular tank....
Only similiar thing was I had dwarf comp fry hiding in beside the Multies shells, pretty cool....
Look forward to seeing your set up..... :good:

Yeah ive also read of anothere persons tank with having the community fry raising behaviour like you mention. Even subdominant fish who hadnt paired would also help.

The Fairy Cichlids will stop as a group, so only buy what you intend to keep, if you went for a group of 4 and tried to get either 1 male 3 females or 2 of each then i can see it being a pretty nice group! If one pair have young then the others in the group will help to raise and defend the fry. The Lemon Cichlids will add some nice colour to your tank too, and with it being 4ft there should be plenty of space for them all to get along without having too many arguments. This could change when raising fry, but should still have enough space to get along. The Telmatochromis Burgeoni mentioned in an earlier post are of similar colour to the Fairies so bare this in mind when considering your stocking. Although the female will be almost black. You could also consider a group of chekered barbs and/or zebra loaches to compliment the Tanganyikian theme.

HTH :)
