Taking The Discus Plunge

Hi not been on here for a while, just after some advice really I'm thinking about going for the discus plunge I have a 45 gal tank is this big enough if so how many and what tank mates could I have , any other advice appreciated too

The 'general' rule that most stick to is 10gal per fish. Discus are a social fish and do better in groups of 6+. You also need to be aware that they are quite a tall fish so do better in taller tanks. They also require very high quality water so be prepared to do frequent high percentage water changes with good quality water.

I would avoid tank mates unless you have a much bigger tank.

Idealy discus need a 55 gallon tank minimum. And in a tank that saize you can keep 5 discus. But you could get juvinile discus and keep them in the 45 for about 6 months until you could get a bigger tank. Hope this helps, and discus are by far worth the cost !!!

Yea I was thinking that you see iv got a 75gal ATM with Oscar and jag cichlid in but I'm gonna be moving within 6 months so I'm getting a 6x2x2 so the discus will be moving into the 75 gal which I van assume that's a good size for them

I was thinking of getting of getting 6x juvenile discus and growing them on how should I add them all at once or any other order

Yes add all together I got 8 juveniles in a 75 gallon tank and 2 lots of them have paired up one year on but they are a great fish which are not as difficult too look after as ppl say. So long as regular water changes are made. I have Malaysian trumpet snails in with them and tetras and cardinals which I found helped settle them down from 'bickering' behaviour. The mts are great as they have helped keep water quality and algae down to a minimum. And only multiply to the size of your tank and food amounts left over. Just remember if your getting juveniles to keep upto three or four times daily for a short while whilst they grow.

As to the two pairs they must have laid eggs 40+ times each but will not survive in my community tank (I did try seperating in a bair tank but the eggs/wriggles never survived but suppose they'll keep trying lol

cheers doodster i have decided to get the 6 juvees in my 45 gal ten grow them on for my 75 gal i have decided to leave the big nasties as discus allow me to keep other peacful fish i like such as apisto's and corys i have some nice stendker discus in my work so ill be having a a few of them

i dno lol theres two really nice leopard skins that are around 10-12cm in diametre woul you say thats a good size to get em ?

I have some stendker great quality fish well the ones I got are.

I messed up when raising my discus a year and a half ago. If I were to do it over I would grow them out in a bear bottom tank with No other fish. I would feed a lot more the. I did never ever skip a wc. Like I said I messed up and did not do all that now I have stunted discus it's sad. I know what I did wrong and will not do that again.

If you don't have the time to grow them out right get larger or even adult discus. When I do the discus thing over I will buy 4+" fish no smaller then that. I will not try and grow out 2" discus ever again.

ye the ones at my work are 12cm+ im not going to cheap out with them plus i can see the colours coming through on slightly larger fish i have a 75gal tank with my big nasties in which will be going into a 6x2x2 soon so a nice 75gal will be free for em i was looking at getting some rummynose, bolivian rams and corys for the set up... as for maintenance and feeding i do 25% wc on my tanks once a week religiously so another 25% 2 times a week isnt much bother keeps me busy and as far as feeding goes ill just feed the guys little as often so i iv heard is best for discus

also guys what would be the best thing to do add the other fish first or the discus first ?

wharf have some stunning wild discus in at the minute that are kept in tap water. they are about 5-6 inches and about £70 each.

manchester isnt tha far from there so may be worth a look.
