So you have a tank that states you should be able to fill with e.g. 250 litres
By the time you've added substrate, rocks maybe, slate perhaps, lots of bogwood possibly, where does this leave your volume and do you still stock as if it were 250 litres?

i know 1 litre = 1 kilogram, so im guessing a 5 kilogram rock counts as 5 litres of water ????

or does it matter about the volume of the rock, as the density and weight are totally different.

i guess volume.

it wouldnt displace as much as some would be above water

its all a bit too complicated for me to CARE :P

yes but differrent masses and oh its far to complicated. Stock as if an empty tank so much easier. The science otherwise is totally beond me

Stock for water volume. Consider an African cichlid tank, which are often heavy with rock work. If half the volume is rock you have reduced tank volume by 50%.

The few times I've loaded up a tank with decorations I pretty much guess at the final volume. I imagine you could count buckets with a know volume when filling, or time how long it takes to fill that bucket with a hose, then time how long it takes to fill the tank.
