Hi

I've got a Fluke and tapeworm tablet medication to try to treat my platy who's gotten the 'skinny disease' - someone said it's probably an internal parasite/worm. And Sterazin hasn't worked.

I'm putting the platy in my 18.5 litre betta tank (and the betta's going in the community in a trap for the timebeing. Because I have tetras in my main tank and it says not to use the med on them.

But the important question is, its an 18.5 litre tank, and the dosage is one tablet per 20 litres. I plan to dissolve it in a cup of water first anyway, but would it be unsafe to put the whole tablet in, or after its dissolved should I not pour in the whole amount? leave like 10% in the cup?

Or is it close enough?

Don't want to OD my poor fish...

Thanks

Thanks germ!

The thing is tiny - impossible to break a bit off. I had considered that until I opened them up and looked at it.

I've also just put it in a cup to start dissolving - but I don't think it is! It fell apart into a powder, but it doesn't seem to want to dissolve! I'm sitting here stirring it every five mins with a plastic knife but its still a snowstorm in there. A little bit might have dissolved, but I can't really tell...

Should I just put it in anyway? I mean, I'll sit and stir it for at least another hour, but after that???

Have you tried using warmer water?
Is it past its expirey date?
I wouldn't add it until dissolved in case someone decided it was food :dunno:

lol - good idea Germ.

If you put the tablet in 20ml of hot water, dissolve it, then pour out about 1.5-2 ml then add the remaining into your tank.

Thanks guys

Tried the hot water - maybe a LITTLE more dissolved but it hasn't made much difference!

There's no huge chunks, its in a powder - this has been in over two hours now!

The instructions didn't specifically say dissolve it first - it just seemed common sense to me, and that the fish might try and eat it otherwise.

I might just try adding it very, very slowly...

Unless anyone else has any thoughts?

No - Aquarium Science - they're an Australian company according to the label. I know, I was shocked too, LOL.

If it says it is meant to go straight into the aquarium, as the jungle anti-parasite med tablets (phew) do then i'd put it in, can you bury it under a rock or some substrate if you are worried about it being eaten? Or wrap it in a tight/filter media bag?

But it doesn't specifically say add straight to the aquarium either! All it says is "use at the rate of 1 tablet per 20L of aquarium water. After 48 hours, change approximately 25% of the water. Dose may be repeated after 7 days to prevent reinfestation"

In addition to the usual: "remove activated carbon and slow down the flow rate of ub gravel filtration (which i dont have anyway) for duration of treatment"

:dunno: It's helpful isn't it!

Ummm....
I'll get googling.

Doh, 'aquarium science' google, not easy, any website info on the packet/instructions?

Found it;

Should be dissolved in a cup of water and i quote;

Use at the rate of 1 tab per 40L of aquarium water. Pre-dissolve the tablets in a cup of water. The tablets will quickly disintegrate in a small amount of water. Maintain normal filtration and aeration. Treatment may be repeated after 7 days if necessary. All fish benefit from a 25% water change before commencing treatment.

:dunno: not helpful really.....

In fact that doesn't even sound like the same product, but it IS an anti-parasite tablet made by aquarium science, australia????

Haha oh dear this is turning into such a thing...

Yeah they have a website, I checked it already it's down because it;s 'under construction' *rolls eyes*

In all seriousness, this stuff has been sitting here with me getting stirred for hours now, it's in a fine powder, I'm just gonna add it slowly over the next half hour - it's 11pm at night - I need to go to bed!

The only other real possible relevant info is that the active ingredient is praziquantel.

Thanks for all your help though germ!

*Edit*
Just saw the rest of your post -

No that's not it. I think Aquarium Science must be a common name - this one is actually kinda Science Produces logo - sublogo Aquarium Science. So yeah.

This is the one I have:

No, sorry wasn't being nasty by the way, can't find it anywhere, are you sure it isn't an old company thats closed, hence the tablets may not work due to age?

It's okay, I know you weren't being nasty!

No, it just says they're closed for upgrades, but who knows what that could mean.

Anyhow, I'm gonna do my best with what I've got to work with. And the tabs are well within their expiry (December NEXT year).

Thanks for all your help germ!
