Hi,

Just wondering whether my swordtail is pregnant. There's a a huge dark spot on the back of the belly. I don't know if gravid spots get so big, or distinct. Is she pregnant, or no? Should I be worried?

The spot is much darker, distinct, and larger than it appears in this picture. This is the best picture I could get. It just doesn't stay still!

She's pregnant. I've heard that the gravid spots darken as the females get closer to birth, but you may want to double check that. Some females just keep their gravid spots when they aren't pregnant either. Regardless, it's not something you need to worry about.

She looks pretty pregnant to me, mine was a bit bigger than yours when she gave birth, yours hasn't squared off fully yet by the looks of that photo though, could be a week or so left, but that was just comparing it to the size mine was during pregancy, i'm sure they all differ slightly.

Yes I'd worry about what you are going to do with all the fry once they are born! lol

Lol I'm kind of worried about the fry too. My swordtails don't like breeder boxes. Last time I put my other female in the breeder box, she freaked out :(

And I have a big sailfin Molly that could probably eat the fry in a day!!

Honestly, if you let the other molly eat the fry, you'll be better off. A single female livebearer can over populate a tank in just a few months.

Yea I know, I had like 30 fry within the first week of running my tank!

My ghost shrimps took care of them though.

I'd like to have some fry though, just for the sake of it.

Often times some fry will survive. I let my females just drop their fry I the tank (I raise guppies) and every once in a while some will survive. Right now I have two 3 week old fry

The day after I got my Silver Molly, she gave birth to 20+ fry, now 4 months later I have 5 of them left and they are getting pretty big now, nice to raise a group from birth and see them mature.

Yea I have some 3 month old fry. It's nice seeing them grow. I also found 8 fry within the last two weeks!

Ah congratulations! Were they from the Swordtail pictured above?

Mine is just about to drop again, found one Swordtail fry 2 weeks ago in my tank, not seen it since though, hope it turns up again soon (or it may have already been eaten)!

Honestly, I have no idea. Two of them are yellowish, and the remaining six are pitch black. Maybe it was her and one of my black mollies that had the fry.
