If you wont proper quality look into denon, there not as good as they used to be but trust me you wont be disapointed

optical cable /stereo/dvd/vhs/camcorders anything that has rgb like ps3 and scart tons of speakers on the amp you can make it up to 7.1 surround and tha sub has its own amp too which has another 4/6 speaker outputs this was mine when i had it im sure ive missed some stuff out too

HDMI = High definition media interface it is what tvs, blu-ray, ect. use essentially it interlaces the video and audio signal into one cable as a result it is easier for copyright producers to encrypt the data and easier to hook up.
Altenatives are:
Video signal:
DVI-D = Digital visual interface only digital signal
DVI-A = Digital visual interface only analogue signal (I know it contradicts itself)
DVI-I = Digital visual interface with both analogue and digital signal so intercompatible between old and new hardware with an adapter.
Component =
etc....

Audio signal:
Coaxial cable - Copper cable shielded from distortion by layers of different metals
Toslink = Toshibas optical cable connection
Optical cable = glass or plastic fibres used to transfer the signal via light
etc..


If your looking for a killer AV setup it should defo be run by a pc imo as many of the high-end components are ideal for a cinema style setup. If you want help with that just post in the section at the bottom of the forum.

Jay - I find bose to be over hyped and living off their brand name image rather then true quality speakers that an audiophile would appreciate as such I haven't listened to their latest ranges so they may of improved.

my ex boss used to have a 7.2 bose setup and it was absolutly crystal clear and the bass was astonishing everything sounded perfectly clear even when it was at its loudest but he also had a 50ft square room to play it in lol and we used bose and yamaha in the music studio but i do agree bose live off the name it is a very fasionable name and a massive price tag to go with it but i personally rate very highly of yamaha

bose actually supply speakers to most of todays equipment believe it or not

when i started looking into this i was looking @ Samsung HT-BD2R then found kef kit540 and then told bout the yamaha amp which looks very impressive yamaha RX-V565

was also looking for a dvd player/hard drive at first but then want blu ray, cant find with a hard drive and the girlfriend suggested sky+hd as hd with a hard drive and get a seprate blu ray player.....

as you can tell.... am at a little loss at the mo and help is appreciated

the tv has a optical input also, which is helpful to expand on

Well I say use a PC and you can get sky to work on it + have easy access to harddrives so have near infinite storage space and I think the sky boxs aren't to hot on their onboard audio processors an Asus HDAV or even a Asus xonar DX or D2X would be better. You can also add blu-ray at a later if needed by simply adding to an optical drive bay.

a pc is the way to go as it processes the sound and picture soooooo much more and like saltynay said the storage on a pc is alot better and it would be cheaper in the longrun for upgrades too like hard drives and bluray

so you possibly want

yamaha reciever + speakers
bluray player (sony imo) but there may be better ones im not sure

Ok but a pc would give you better picture and audio more importantly audio. I have a gaming desktop, a Home theatre PC, a laptop, a tablet notepad and netbook each has their own uses. Whats the point of getting decent speakers if the signal you are sending to them is not upto scratch. PC is easily upgradeable whilst once you have bought a Blu-ray player the firmware is normally stuck on so you can't upgrade without buying a new whilst with a pc you can easily download and use various bits of software etc. Or are you just nervous at building your own pc? I have talked 12 year olds through building a pc via online its what I do and have been doing for the past 4 years been a techie forum geek.

not to sure about a price limit at tho mo.... but the time being im not to fussed aslong as its good and done properly....

did/have looked into a couple of sony blu ray players which have good reviews? cant remember which tho lol so far, the yamaha amp is looking the way to go but wanna make sure. thought i was sure a few times before with the samsung system etc but then something throws a spanner in the works

well just do alot of research on what you want to buy even go to av shops and get a live show on what you want to

but i agree with saltynay and im thinking of building a stand alone cinema pc my oridginal pc is 2 years old and dead at the mo so im thinking of building it back up
