Surprise Kribensis Fry! Some Advise Please...

So  I thought I'd have another look just in case and :good: there they were swimming around under mum outside of the cave!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! They seem tiny though, I reckon there is about 20 little fellas! Bad news is daddy kribensis does not seem well. I found him this morning up by the filter gulping like crazy, he seems to have pop eye. I have sectioned him off in a net tank. He is not interested in his family  I've done a 10% water change and will do one daily for a while.

Thanks for posting to make me check again! Feel a bit stupid really but tis the joys of fish keeping I guess! BTW my male krib is a beauty, if he gets better I'll take a photo and post it.

Many thanks for your support.

Told ya! PICS?

I just saw some little wrigglers this morning, if they become free swimming how do you feed them, mine also in community tank.

Ofcourse, the fry may be hiding and you cant see them

I didnt say they were all eaten up.

Graphic 5: Just feed them crushed flake, or BBS

micro worms or newly hatched brineshrimp are the best foods for the baby cichlids. Both can be found at the local petshop.
Micro worms are kept in plastic containers and fed on yeast. When the worms climb up the sides of the container you wipe them off and feed to the fry. You need t make a new culture each week. You do this by making some oatmeal (porridge) and spreading a thin layer of this over the bottom of a container. When it is cool add a teaspoon of worms from the old culture. In a week the new culture will be ready to use. Then you can start adding a little bit of bakers yeast every day to encourage the worms to grow.

brineshrimp can be brought as eggs and need to be hatched in salt water, (either natural seawater or artificial salt water made with rock salt or sea salt). Add 1/4 level teaspoon of shrimp eggs to 1litre of salt water and aerate well. After 24-48 hours the brown eggs will hatch and you should see little tiny orange things in the water. Take the air stone out of the hatching container and wait 5 minutes. The baby shrimp (called nauplii) will gather in a pile and you can suck them out with an eye dropper and feed them to the fish. Put the airstone back in the hatching container until you need more nauplii. You should hatch out some eggs each day or every second day to have a steady supply.

I now have a little swarm of fry that follow mum everywhere, my heart is in my mouth when they start to spread out, the male then darts about collecting them. One of the best things i've seen for years. Hard to get food to them though. :hyper:

they grow really fast they do get the feed, good luck i love mine i have 2 lots of fry. the mail goes from one end of the tank to the other, but he wont let the biger fry go near the littler ones he scatters them, the other femails ready to have more as shes really looking in great condition, again best of luck with yours,i spend hours watching them,,kenny

Aren't Kribensis African Cichlids? They're not from those great lakes but they're from a river in Western Africa I believe. Therefore they can be kept in similar water conditions as the New World Cichlids I think.
