I'm sure I've asked this before but I can't for the life of me remember what people said... I'm not thinking of getting one of these fish but I would like to know for future reference.
Anyone know what type of cichlid this is?

Definitely a long finned ram.

Why are they called German blue if they are red?

They're not really that red; it's just the tone of the picture :)

As to why 'German blue', now that is a complicated tale!

The original wild fish used to be called just 'rams', after their Latin name Mikrogeophagus ramirezi. Then they started mass breeding them in the Far East, and the quality of the fish became very poor (and they are already a quite delicate little fish).

After that, some were bred in Germany which were of a much better quality, and so were called 'German rams' so people could tell the good fish from the poor ones.

People don't like it being known that their livestock isn't too great, so all rams became called 'German blue', whether they were from Germany or not (I believe the best rams at the moment are coming from Holland, and so are 'Dutch rams').

And then Golden rams started appearing, so the wild coloured fish became known as 'blue' to distinguish them from the other colour.
Of course, now there is also an almost completely blue ram, which is called the 'electric blue'

Thank you for clearing that up for me.
