I would like to keep a shoal of tetras in my community tank with my new betta. I know some of them can be fin-nippers, so what type would people recommend as non-nippy?

I am thinking of red phantom tetras, x-ray tetras or beacon tetras, but would be open to any suggestions. Or maybe some cherry barbs, they are meant to be peaceful?

Tank is 14 gallons, the betta is alone in there at present, but I will eventually add some cories as well as the tetras.

tetras are a member of the piranah family.. hence the nipping. none can be realy safely kept with betta, their finns are just too tempting. ive kept xrays with betta without problems, but i would consider this the exception rather than the rule.

as for barbs.. well ive no experiance with them, but i know tiger barbs are a big no no with long finned fish (hell they will turn on their own if the see weakness!!) so id expect cherrys to be not much different

don't do tetra, i did and they nipped mine, so they went....cherry barbs are 'meant' to be ok but again as blue said....i wouldn't risk it.
I've gone for harlequin rasboras as a tetra replacement, very timid fish that won't be aggressive to anything, not even each other it seems with mine, unlike tetra who take pot shots at everyone!

So if you want small fish like tetra, go for rasboras either harleys or hengel's rasboras! :good:
