Hello, I have an empty planted tropical aquarium that is fully cycled. What species of fish would you guys recommend? I'm aware this tank is small, and I will be upgrading in size to atleast a 50 gallon tank very soon. The fish will be well cared for, I will be doing 25% water changes every 1-2 weeks depending on how busy I am. Smaller fish (around 1 inch in size) is perfered, but I will consider slightly bigger. Would the max amount of 1 inch fish be 6? the last thing I wan't to do is over stock my tank.

Guppies, bettas, most small shrimp, African dwarf frogs, most small snails, smaller species of corydoras such as hasboras or Pygmy, and chili rasboras
And for the more experienced freshwater dwarf puffers or FW pipefish

I believe Saw's list is a nice one.

However, for a ten gallon, I'd recommend at least one water change a week, not bi monthly, because these small tanks are more prone to toxins in the water, so water quality needs to be top notch.

If I had a second ten gallon on hand, I'd either get a new male betta, or I would do chili rasboras with a bunch of red cherry shrimp. Black background. Black sand. Tons of plants. That would look really swell, I think.

I like the chili rasboras with cherry shrimp idea. How many chilli rasboras would you suggest for a 10 gallon tank? and how many cherry shrimp? thanks

Start with a colony of ten or so shrimp, they should reproduce, and maybe six to eight rasboras. They school, so you need at least six.

Youll want some mosses like marim moss ball, or java fern for the shrimps.

Willow, java, and flame moss are also good choices.

Mosquito rasbora are lovely! I'd like to have some one day.

If you want another idea on fish for this tank, peacock gudgeons would be suitable. HERE is some info on them.

If you can find them spotted blue-eyes (pseudomugil gertrudae) are also lovely. Again, HERE is more info.

Glad to hear you've cycled the tank. Looking forward to seeing whatever fish you choose, please do post pics!

Endlers are another choice, I have some in a 10 gal tank with RCS and Assassin snails.

Also has low tech plants, java fern, elodea, anubias and moss balls in there with some pieces of bogwood and indian almond leaves.

A fun little tank
