i did get some of the clowns, unfortunatly they were very small and didnt make it througj the 1st cpl of days. i thougjt tjey prefered higher temps. i will ne setting up a smaller tank 130 ltrs for my mosquito rasbora sundandio axelrodi black darters and some sparkling gouram(i when i finally get hold of some). and i was going to have another go at clowns in that tank 27 deg C

I have a M & F Gardneri Killifish and although they move all around the tank the male does spend a fair amount of time right at the surface and he has lovely colourful markings to look at. They also seem a peaceful fish so far.

i have heard they can be quite nippy and have quite large mouthes however they are great looking fish . anybody else

Microdevario Kubotai ?
Again, they do move around a bit, but mine spend a fair bit of time at the top. They do jump.

Hatchets? There is a dwarf/small one I think.....but may still be too big for your tastes?

Blue eye fork tail rainbowfish.
These are active, colourful and stay near the water surface.
They may still be a little to large for you as they grow to 5-6 cm.
Assuming you are from the Wirral Andy's have some nice juveniles in atm.

Chela dadiburjori :good: fit your specs perfectly! :)

They are small, 1.5 - 2cm max, surface dwelling, yellow with metallic blue stripe/dots down side, fast and friendly.

They are pretty much like a cross between small danios and hatchets.

Hatchets are a good one, not had them personally as I like the mid bottom dwellers

You give some really great suggestions. I just wonder where people can actually buy them........

Good question... I always had these fish in and they never sold! They are amazing fish and if looked after well, they do actually readily breed in the aquariums.

:good:

They are readily available from the suppliers.... but until there is demand for them, shops dont generally think to order them. Print out a picture of one and basic stats like 'easy to keep, top dweller, non nippy, tropical, small etc' and suggest that they would be a very good fish to get in! :) well.... in MA shops anyway. Be friendly with the person importing fish :p i know when i look at the lists... there are literally 15 odd lists with hundreds if not thousands of species and variations of species. Easier to stick with what you know!

I have marble hatchets and they basically stay at the surface of the water. They are smaller than the other types of hatchets--keep about 1.5". They are very skittish, but in a large group (at least 6) they will settle down and feel more comfortable. Surface plants will help too. Once they are comfortable, they can be pretty commical in their antics--chasing each other in a 'ring around the rosie' type way. Most of the time, though, they just stick to the same spot and really get active when you feed them--they also seem to swim around more when the lights are out (I have double-bright LED's, that VERY bright).
