Well carrying on from my last post, all the guppies recovered which i was relieved with. Yesterday night my favourite female even dropped fry. So anyway i left her in the box overnight to make sure she was done giving birth. Today she was her normal self, vibrant colours etc. Anyway i let her out the box, 30 seconds late shes dead as a dodo.

Any ideas what caused it? I wonder if she picked up a stone or something or got sand in her gills. :( so sad she was my favourite.

Jorel

Btw, water stats are amo: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate:10

Keep to same thread.
It's quite common for livebeares to die after giving birth.

Oh dear - I do think that sometimes just giving birth weakens these fish and they just keel over. I had a beautiful, large female for about a year and she gave birth numerous times, then the last batch of fry she gave birth to was the largest amount she'd had - but the next day she died. Same sort of thing as yours - she seemed to be swimming about ok and eating then a few hours later when I checked she was lying on the bottom belly up!

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe she was attacked - any signs of ripped fins?

Regards - Athena

No she wasnt attacked. I wonder whether she had a heart attack actually thinking back on it, cos it was just after i turned the lights on and i dropped the tank lid down and it sent all fish scattering :/ so sad anyway

How old was the fish.
Giving birth all the time shorten a fish life span, as it takes its toll on a fish.
If you are breeding give them a good varied diet.

I got her just after x-mas but she was from a friend whos tank is full of them so i dont know how old she was. I feed them all a flake food and vary it with bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimps.

Try introducing some green veg into there diet.
peas are good as it keep the fish going to the toilet, as fish can get constipation with to many dried foods.
Peas, broc, spinach, green cabbage, sproats, lettuce, cucumba.
My fish didn't care to much for lettuce and cucumba.
All you do is blanch the veg for a few minutes in boiling water.
Don't forget to pop peas out of shell, as fish can't digest the shell.

Thanks, as chance would have it i bought a seaweed clip so that i could put veggies in the tank, i just wasnt sure what veggies to use. So do all of them need blanching? What about the cucumber?

Yes soak the cucumba in the boiling water just to soften it.
Some members say remove seeds, then some members say there fish love the seeds.
Remove the uneaten cucumba after aday as it will mess the water up and even cause an ammonia spike.

is it possible that the last batch was so much, like so many fry, that it cudnt handle it with the stoamch going back to normal and it just died ?
