The red started as a mark yesterday.....any ideas?

Looks like ammonia poisoning but you have no ammonia :S possibly the mild nitrate?

Absalutely no ammonia for years! The water comes out of the tap with 40 nitrate in it. (always has)

Nitrate needs to be a LOT higher before it actually hurts most fish. I think your fish was just weak or something... if you lose another fish, THEN you might have a problem.

Its bacterial bless him R.I.P.

It does look bacterial, possibly BHS.

If the problems continue (==another fish gets infected), Maracyn2 or a similar antibiotic may be a good idea.
