Substrates

I was just wondering if surface dwellers or middle area dwelling fish really care about their substrate?? like if a killi or a gourami would do better or appreciate more sand or gravel aquariums. *just an example*

Killis and gouramis? or just fish in general? Ive never seen any of my surface or middle dwelling fish actually rest on the bottoms of their tanks, let alone sleeping down there.

90% of fish sleep on the bottom, my angels do and my guppies and platys and well you get the idea

Colour is also important-darker and more natural colours being preffered.
