ive ordered my new tank, and im placing all the old media into the new filter as they take the same media.

the new tank takes more media. so if i put the old media in the new filter, would it be safe to add my fish from my old tank? or should i caryy on dosing amonia?

my other Q is...is there a substitute to ammonia?

just to expand on the 1st Q.
i have a rekord 60 with the box filter it came with. and the new tank is a rio 125 with a taller filter that takes more pads

it takes:(from the top of the pads to bottom)
filter floss (replace from old tank)
carbon impregnated sponge (replace with old on)
nitrate sponge (replace with old one)
blue sponge(replace with old one)
cirax (just like cermaic noodles)new
fine blue sponge (new)
fine blue sponge (new)

will i be able to add my current stock instantly? or should i cycle further?

Truck, I have read old posts on some forums talking about using ammonium chloride but I would not know where to begin to use that.

you should be able to clone the tank like that but wont be able to add any more stock than you have now for 4-5 weeks till it all settles. Move about half or more of the old tank water over too as it wont be as much of a shock to the fish then top it off with new water (declorinated of course)

ps. the carbon just polishes and removes chemicals out the water so no need to move that across either.are you sure its a newer rio 125 with the bi-flow filter as there still loads of the older stock about.

no its not but the cirax does fit the old filters. juwel are not putting the bio flow filters into their tanks until the summer (except the rekord), as there having big orders at the moment and there tanks are selling like hot cakes at the moment.

but the cirax does fit the old systems

ill go for the clone.

should i fill it up with old tank water then add fish? and then top off?

i went from rekord to rio 180 and just added all the filtermedia from one to the other
i then added half the water from the rekord and topped the rio up with fresh water
i waited for it to get to temp (used 3 heaters so didnt take long) then added my fish

all were fine kept the feeding to every other day and have had no probs since

though i did wait for 6 weeks before adding any new fish just to make sure there were no problems with the tank

move the fish out to a temp home aka a bucket, move some of the old water over not to much as to take the rubbish with it, top it off with treated water (mean while swap the filters over ) make sure its up to temp and not to cloudy put the fish in there new home

keep your stocking the same for a few weeks as the bacteria in the old sponges will be right for there bio load within those few week the bacteria will move into there new home too and bred like crazy hopefully, then you should able to stock slowly

ps. once everything is moved over keep an eye on the water stats for 3-4 days just to make sure things are going ok.
