Do external filters have to be below the aquarium?

i have a fluval external and it is a gravity fed system, not sure about the rest but i would have thought they would have to be below the water inlet level

You have to have a siphon effect so on a level or below the suction level in the tank is best, otherwise you will lose prime in the pump, it relies on gravity

My Prime 10 seems to claim in the intructions that so long as you set it up below the level of the tank, once it's going you dont seem to have to keep it there... doesnt seem likely to me tho.
