Just wanted to know if anyone has used stresszyme in their tanks before?? its by API and claims to be a biological filtration booster.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

I have used Stress Zyme and i don't really rate it at all, to be honest.

Most of these products which claim to 'boost filter bacteria' are next to useless. The only ones i know of which actually work are Bio-Spira (which is difficult to source outside of the US) and Bactinnettes.

I wouldn't say they don't work, and you are welcome to try them for yourself, but most of these products effectiveness is debateable to say the least.

Hope this helps you.

Cheers :good:

When I started the lfs recommended Stress Zyme to cycle my first tank. It worked fine for me. It took 4-5 weeks to fully cycle without fish, I then added 6 tiger barbs and a flying fox, the barbs lasted over 2 years unfortunetely had accident with CO2 but the flying fox is still alive, almost 3-4 years now.

I have used the same stuff to cycle 2 other tanks now as well, again took 4-5 weeks to cycle, I think if you are patient you could see decent results. I could not recommend anything else as this is the only way I have cycled the tanks before.

However the last tank I setup I used existing media from one of the other tanks, took 1 week before adding any fish (just to be on the safe side) but was actually ready from day one.

The above poster has inadvertantly posted evidence to surgest that it doesn't work. Adverage time to cycle without a biological bacteria in the bottle product is 4-5 weeks. The above poster used Stress Zyme and low and behold, it reduced his cycle time by an impressive 0 weeks, when compaired to the adverage time to cycle without these products :shifty: I think you can draw your own conclusion from that...
As BTT above said Biospirra and bactinetts are the only products that work, and require constant refrigeration to remain active. Other than that, mature media from an existing tank is the only way to reduce cycling time.
How are you cycling? With ammonia? Fish food? Or has the LFS got you "cycling" with this bacteria in the bottle product and fish/ bacteria in the bottle product and leaving the tank for a week then fish?

All the best

The best place to use anything ending in zyme has to be flushed after you add it to the water.

See how useful this site is, had I known about this site when I was actually starting out, I would have found out that this product was actually useless and there are better ways to cycle the tanks. Anyway its good to know for me now and will also help others. Thanks

hmm thatnks for that guys, i got a free bottle of the stuff when my friend took me in too buy a tank. Our friend at the lfs gave us both a bottle, i wont go wasting my money on it by the sound of it.

He has me cycling my tank with a few fish and they are doing quite well, if i had have found this site before i put fish in i would have done a fishless cycle but nevermind, my fish are doing good and havent had a dead or sick one yet.

cheers
