Strange Yellow Foam?

hi all,i have been stting up my new tandk and I have just put in the substrate and water but when I pput the sand in the water a wierd yellow foam gathered at the top.the sand is kids play sand from the early learning center.Is the foam harmful?

Dunno. Did you wash the sand first, like LOADS? It has loads of dust and crap on it.

i was planning to use a hose for about 5 mins on it but my dad said it would waste water so i was restricted to washing it 3 times in a sink

Yeah that's prob what it is then. Try and wash it a few more times in the tank and then syphon out all the water. Pain I know but you'll have more probs if you don't.

It happens if you dont wash it well enough. Give the sand a good clean in the tank then drain the water and fill it up again.

Would you like to live in a confined space with lots of concrete or plaster dust (for example) floating around that you couldn't get away from? How would your lungs feel after a while? Would you consider it harmful? Answer those questions and you'll have your answer

I dunno but at the very least it'll look awful.

I'm gonna have to clean some of my left over sand again

If you're replacing the water then make sure you give the sand a really really good stir first to kick up as much muck and dust as possible before the water change.

Its just the sand foam, if you have no fish in there just leave it for a couple days it'll go away by itself, then just splash water over the residue to get rid of that.

if only you said earlier oh well it feels more secure after scrubing the sand 5 times over too get rid of it,thanks everyone for the info
