I have a 50gal tank thats been set up over a year now with, among others, 6 threespot gouramis in it. Everything was going fine until about 5 weeks ago when we redecorated the room they're kept in, they used to be friendly, confident and inquisitive fish, but have become very timid and wont even come out of hiding for food if they can see you in the room.
:/
Has anyone else encountered this kind of behaviour? All of the other fish seem fine but the gouramis are really stressed. Would be grateful for any ideas how to get them to come out again!

They might think that they are in a new tank and if you left the light off for two days they should be fine. :)

Did you paint as well as decorate? Did you ventilate the room adequately while this was going on? Could they have grabbed fume-filled air bubbles?

I'm usualy a pessimist but this time I'd say it sounds more like they just need a little time to settle into this new environment. It may also mean their tankmates are not peaceful enough or that they are growing up and territoriality/aggression is now becoming too much to handle - this could/would also have been triggered by the change as the hierarchy that was in place now needs to be re-established and they'd naturaly be quite stressed about all this.
