So I have some fake plants (fabric) in my tank. I noticed this weird brown on the plants and although I've tried many different Google searches I am having no luck identifying it. Is this something I need to be worried about? It's mostly just the one plant, although I have another of that same kind that has a teeny bit of it on the tip.

Have the same on ours. I think that it is rotting waste food. I take our plants out at water change time and scrub them in the discarded tank water. Seems to do the trick.

Its algae growing on your plants. I agree with David. Scrub your plants witha toothbrush whenever yousee the fuzz

Is there anyway to prevent it from growing? Like, am I not keeping the tank clean enough, etc?

I think this is more of a case of overfeeding our fish OR our fish not eating all that is presented to them. Subsequently we don't see the flakes on the plants - they take on the same colour as the plants being so thin - and the next thing we know is that we have brown spots on them.
At least that is my theory for what it is worth.

Just a case of giving them a good scrub in old tank water at each water change.

I think it's probably algae like the other member said because I have the same thing right now. I just realized it was algae yesterday but the last week I was worried and for the life of me couldn't figure out what it was. I was told to cut the lights back and it should stop. In my situation it definitely can't be from fish flakes or over feeding because I don't even have any fish( currently fish less cylcling). Anyway I'm just a rook but I would start with giving them a wash and then cut the lights back.

Thanks. I'm thinking about getting a timer for the tank because I'm not always home early enough to shut it off. Plus I've heard that consistency is better for the fish. Pretty sure I'm not over feeding as I'm fairly OCD about only giving them what they can eat all up. Whatever it is the fish don't seem to be bothered. Every day they're getting more active and settled into their home. Cherry Barbs are algae eaters too so I guess they'll help a bit!

There you go, too much light + no live plants = algea. Why do you have the lights on when your not there if you have no live plants? The natural daylight in the room will be enough for the fish.

Also Cherry Barbs are not strictly algea eaters but are omnivorous, as in they will eat just about anything. But if you are feeding fishfood why would they want to eat algea? I have never seen mine eat algea.
