Hi Zoe,

Drop a few drops of vinegar onto them. If the vinegar fizzes, they're not safe. No fizzing, should be ok.

I would always boil them in water for at least 10 mins before putting them in though, just to be safe. :good:

edit: don't know about the round pebbles thing, sounds like nonsense to me. :S

Like BTT said, add some vinegar and look out for fizzing etc. If they were collected from a beech then they should be fine just boil them for a while.

Here in the states I have bought the small pea rock at Home Depot or Lowes and they have worked great. I normally put a certain amount in a pan and boil a little at a time til I have enough for my tanks. They also have the stones that you mentioned or very similiar to it, I'm sure there shouldn't be anything wrong with using them, I use the small pea gravel in the large bags first off cause it's way cheaper than buying from a pet store and second I like the natural look for my gravel.

Ok boiling now nearly ready.

Should look nice in tank :hyper:

just don't get them mixed up with the pan with potatos in it :hyper:

usually anything but limestone is fine (corrodes in acidic conditions). i just washed mine well under the hot tap and in they went :)

Nice setup Zoe, they look real nice in your tank. What size tank do you have, I'm trying to get my wife to let me have a 75 gallon soon so I can at least start a nice aquarium. My desire is to have about 5 clowns in a 180 gallon or larger, love the clown loach they are awesome to watch.
