Now i've got the tank in position etc whilst nosing in my LFS i noticed the gobsmakingly high price of the decor, like 3-4 quid a kilo for rocks and such. When, there are 25kg bags of the stuff in the paving section for 5-6 quid.

I was a bit of a chemistry buff at school so i can appreciate that the likes of limestone is a no no. Sandstone is good etc, not so sure with slate, flint etc

Can anybody tell me what to avoid.

Cheers J

Well depends if your wanting the rockwork to effect your water parameter's? What set-up are you having? Most rocks are ok but have a look at this mate:

Doh, never mind.

Got sandstone in the garden that i was going to use but the wife is gittery over it being ok for fish. :look:

Garden centre near me has big lumps of slate, 2 for a fiver (prob 10kgs apiece) those and a lump hammer will do fine i think, esp if i tell her its 'FROM' the lfs. :hey:

Slate is usually fine mate. Sandstone will 'erode' over time so it may cause an issue. Anything with a metalic vein etc running through it can cause problems.

slate or granite are best, sandstone can mess with the ph so I would avoid it.

i used to have slate in my cichlid tank. it worked very well. i layered it up creating caves etc and stuck it all together with aquarium silicone!! fish loved it, didn't effect water parameters and looked great!!

L :good:
