sorry if this info is in a pinned topic i did look but could not find the actual equation i am looking for there was stuff like how many fish in a 10 gallon etc
how many fish or cm of fish per litre or gallon or is like ponds and based on surface area

If your talking about small fish i.e. under 4-5inches for example then you can use the 1inch per 1USGallon rule
bigger or aggressive fish will have their own suggested stocking level,

also , sorry! is that excluding the tail?
 
It is close enough to 4 litres to not matter since it is an approximation anyway. It does not include the tail or a betta would count as twice as much. The idea is to get an idea of the bioload and long fins just don't add to that. There are plenty of other factors that need to be considered, but for fish that never get very big the inch per gallon should keep you from grossly overstocking in terms of bioload.
 
Seconded, though its not just the overall stocking amount that needs to be taken into consideration when stocking your tank - some fish need longer tanks than other etc.

Once you know what fish you want its worth sticking a post on here so someone can have a quick run through and point out any fish that wouldn't work together or in your tank for whatever reason.
